It gives information about the emergency services that respond to disasters, such as fire fighters, FEMA, the Red Cross, and many others. Most importantly, it gives information about shelters, how they are built, where they are located in communities, how clients are processed when they arrive, how the shelters meet basic needs, how to stay clean and healthy in shelters, and how to cope with stress. Author Bobbie Kalman recounts her experiences as a nine-year-old refugee who lived in a number of shelters, and suggests ways that organizations or individual families can help lessen the stresses of living in shelters.
